Flower Ovary

The specimen is the passion flower. I found it in a flower shop in San Francisco. The passion flower contains the ovary, which is the green circle in the image above. The flower ovary is the ovule-bearing lower part of a pistil that ripens into a fruit.

bilateral symmetry

This specimen is a moth, and I found it at a neighborhood park. This moth relates to the term because the the patterns on the wings are 1 example of bilateral symmetry. Bilateral symmetry is the property of being divisible into symmetrical halves on either side of a unique plane.

radial symmetry

This specimen is a jellyfish, and I found it when I was in Korea  The structure of a jellyfish is in radial symmetry because most jellyfishes have four canals. A radial symmetry is a  symmetrical arrangement of constituents, especially of radiating parts, about a central point.

autotroph

This specimen is aloe vera, and it was found in my balcony. Aloe vera is a plant that grows through sunlight, aka photosynthesis. An autotroph is an organism capable of synthesizing its own frood from inorganic substances, using light or chemical energy.

heterotroph

This specimen is a rabbit and it was found at Griffith Park. A rabbit is a heterotroph because its an animal. A heterotroph is an organism that can not synthesize its own food and is dependent on complex organic substances for nutrition.

Endotherm

This specimen is a penguin, and I found it at Seaworld. Penguins are endothermic animals because they are birds. Endotherm is an organism that generates heat to maintain its body temperature, typically above the temperature of its surroundings.

analogous structure

The specimen is a shark dorsal fin and dolphin dorsal fin. They were both found at Sea world, and they are analogous structures. They're analogous structures because the fins are very similar to each other yet they come from different ancestors. Analogous structures are structures of different species that has similar or corresponding function, but they're not from the same evolutionary origin.

vestigial structures

This is an ostrich, and I found it at the LA zoo. The wings of an ostrich are vestigial structures because ostriches can not fly. Vestigial structures is an organ or part which is greatly reduced from the original ancestral form and is no longer functional or is of reduced or altered function.

stigma/style of carpal

This specimen is a groundhouse iris flower. I found it at Ralphs. The groundhouse iris has a stigma and a style. The stigma is the sticky tip of a flower pistil, on which pollen is deposited at the beginning of pollination, and the style is usually the slender part of a pistil, situated between the ovary and the stigma.

K- strategist

The specimen is a tree. The tree was found in front of my house, and it's a K- strategist because it has a long life span. A K- strategist are the species of organism that uses a survival and reproduction strategy that is characterized by production of fewer offspring, long life expectancy, and large body size.

asexual reproduction

The specimen is a starfish. I found the starfish at Dana Point. The starfish is capable of reproducing asexually. The starfish reproduces through the process of fragmentation, a type of asexual reproduction. Asexual reproduction is a form of reproduction that doe not involve meiosis, ploidy reduction or fertilization, and the offspring is a clone of the parent organism because there is no exchange of genetic material.

mullerian mimicry

This is a bumblebee and I found it at a nearby park. The bumblebee relates to the term, mullerian mimicry because the bumblebee is capable of using powerful stings as a defensive mechanism. A mullerian mimicry is a form of protective mimicry in which two or more poisonous or unpalatable species closely resemble each other and are therefore avoided equally by all their natural predators.

Cuticle layer of a plant

This specimen is a leaf. This leaf was found at my house. It's related to the term because the leaf contains a cuticle layer of a plant. The cuticle layer of a plant is a non-cellular, waxy protective layer that protects the epidermis of the green parts of the leaves.

homeostasis

This is a human arm sweating. It was found at the gym in North Hollywood, and the sweating is an example of homeostasis. Homeostasis is the tendency of an organism or a cell to regulate its internal conditions, usually by a system of feedbackcontrols, so as to stabilize health and functioning, regardless of the outside changing conditions. Sweating is an example of homeostasis because it was done to cool off the heat.

anther and filament of stamen

This specimen is a lily flower. The flower was found in my garden. It's related to the term because the lily flower contains the anther and filament of a stamen. The red pollen is the anther, and the green stalk is the filament. The anther is the pollen-bearing part of the stamen, and the filament is the stalk that bears the anther in a stamen.

dicot plant with plant and leaf

This specimen is a rose. The specimen was found in my house. It's related to the term because the rose is a dicot plant. A dicot plant is a flowering plant with two embryonic seed leaves or cotyledons that usually appears at germination. A dicot plant usually has four or five petals or flower parts.

pollen

This specimen is a sunflower. I found the sunflower in my garden. It's related to the term, pollen because the sunflower is a pollen producing flower, and as the image shows, the yellow dust like substance is the pollen. Pollen is the fine powder like material consisting of pollen grains that's produced by the anthers of the seed plants.

lichen

This specimen is a lichen. It was found 2 blocks from my house. This specimen is a lichen because it's a free standing branching tubes on the tree. The specimen was complex and highly branched.  A lichen is any of numerous complex plantlike organisms made up of an alga and a fungus growing in symbiotic association on a solid surface

Animal that has a segmented body

The specimen is a beetle bug. It was found at a park in Orange County. The beetle bug is an animal, and it has a segmented body. The division of functionally connected units along the main body axis defined an animal with a segmented body.

hermaphrodite

The specimen is a slug. The slug was found on my balcony. A slug is born as a hermaphrodite. A hermaphrodite is a person or animal that has both male and female sex organs, or other ssexual characteristics, either abnormally or naturally.

Mutualism

The specimen is a bird and a crocodile. I found it at the L.A zoo. The relationship between an alligator and the bird is a form of mutualism because both organisms benefit from each other. The bird gets its food by eating the food between the crocodile's teeth, and the crocodile gets its teeth cleaned. Mutualism is  an association between organisms of two different species in which each member benefits. The crocodile and bird are two different species yet they benefit from one another.

homologous structures

The specimen is a forearm of a horse and the wing of a bat. Both structures were found at the Smithsonian Museum. A horse forearm and a bat wing  are homologous structures because they both share the same basic skeletal structure. For example, they both have 1 upper limb bone, 2 lower limb bones, and etc. A homologous structure is a structure that is derived from a common ancestor or same evolutionary/developmental origin.

spore

The speciman is a dandelion. The dandelion was found at Pan Pacific Park, and it's a spore. A spore is a small structure that's produced by many plants like ferns, fungi, algaee and some protozoas for reproduction. Spores are similar to seeds but they do not contain any stored foods or sugar.

eukaryote

This specimen is a Yorkshire Terrier. I found this dog at my house. This Yorkshire Terrier is a any cell eukaryote because it is an animal. This organism also has many cells that contains a nucleus. A eukaryote is any cell or organism that possesses a clearly defined nucleus.

fermentation

This item is wine. It was found at my house. Wine is made through the process of fermentation.
During the process, grape juice turns into an alcoholic beverage, wine. Fermentation is the anaerobic conversion of sugar to carbon dioxide and alcohol by yeast.
